When you buy a high-end flagship smartphone these days you kind of expect it to have all the top of the line features that are available from its competition. While there are some features that are exclusive to some OEMs there are some basic features that should be available to everyone as long as the hardware supports it. That is the case with the newly announced LG G7 ThinQ and its 4K video recording capabilities. Recording 4K video at 60fps has become a highly requested feature and the South Korean LG G7 ThinQ just received this feature with its latest OTA update.
The LG G7 ThinQ has had a 4K video recording feature since launch but it was limited to 30 frames per second (shown above). This is perfectly fine for most people but it isn’t optimal and not something that a lot of content creators are looking for these days. So this new OTA update is a welcomed addition for LG G7 ThinQ owners and it shows up as a completely different quality option in the camera settings. Before, the quality options just listed UHD 16:9 3840 x 2160 for 4K, but it now has one labeled UHD 16:9 (60fps) 3840 x 2160.
You should be aware that there is a limit on how long you can record 4K video at 60 frames per second. You are allowed to record 4K at 30 frames per second without any time limitation on the LG G7, but this new 60 frames per second option is capped at 5 to 6 minutes for each video clip. It’s not mentioned if this was due to thermal limitations or storage, but when 4K 30FPS video recording first made its way to Android smartphones it was limited due to thermals.
