LG G7 ThinQ supports A/B partitions for seamless updates

The newly launched LG G7 ThinQ is a return to greatness for the South Korean technology giant. The company has been hard at work making this the best LG phone to date. They’ve been trying to improve the experience of previously released devices by opening up their Software Update Center. Speaking of updates, the LG G7 ThinQ supports A/B partitions for seamless updates, meaning that you shouldn’t ever have to face an “updating..” screen again.

Seamless updates were announced as part of Android Nougat when it launched, and it makes use of two identical system partitions on your device. The updates will install in the background on the system partition you aren’t using, then you simply reboot and you’ll be on the new version. What’s more, if something goes wrong then you’ll just boot back up into the old, working partition. If something goes wrong, you can then try to reinstall the update if you want as well. It’s a pretty neat solution to users not wanting to install updates on their smartphones. It also means fewer device replacements for manufacturers in the case of an update breaking something, as the end user will simply be reverted to the older version.

The LG G7 ThinQ is one of the few Android phones that already support A/B partitions for seamless updates. The Google Pixel devices pioneered the feature when they first launched, followed by a few others like the Essential Phone and the Moto Z2. It does cause some headaches in terms of custom ROM support and other developments on our forums, but it’s a great feature for most other users. LineageOS has supported the A/B partition system for a while now, so it’s only a matter of time before the ball really gets rolling again for development on these devices.
