Facebook Messenger is testing autoplaying video ads

Facebook Messenger Platform

Facebook has always been infamous for serving loads of advertisements across all of its platforms and applications. In addition to all of the other places Facebook sells advertisements already, about 18 months ago, Facebook Messenger was added to the list.

Having to look at static, text-based and/or image-based advertisements right where one would generally converse with their friends and family has made the experience of using Facebook Messenger a lot worse. Personally, whenever I see an advertisement anywhere on the Interwebs, I associate the place with a “public” placeholder in my head instead of a “private” one.

The company, prior to initiating the tests for video ads, had stated that they were running out of places to serve ads, resulting in static ads making their new home at Facebook Messenger and Marketplace.

An official statement was released quite recently:

As we shared with advertisers at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, we are now expanding the availability of video ads to Messenger. We will be rolling out video ads gradually and thoughtfully. People that use Messenger are our top priority and they will remain in control of their experience.

The reason Facebook is expanding into video ads for Messenger could be because of the fact that video advertisements are generally more lucrative, especially when they’re played automatically, without the user’s consent.

Although the inclusion of static advertisements hasn’t triggered any notable changes in the app’s reception, there’s still a glimmer of hope. Stefanos Loukakos, the person running Facebook’s Messenger’s Ad Business, stated that he’s aware of the concerns and User Experience remains the top priority for their team.

The advertisements have started to roll out to Messenger users already. Let us know what you think about having to look at auto-playing advertisements as you converse with your friends and family.
