Xiaomi Sold Over Four Million Smartphones in India in One Month

After announcing that the company will hold its first MIUI Partnership Day in India on November 7, Manu Kumar Jain, the Managing Director of Xiaomi India has now announced via a post on Twitter and Facebook that Xiaomi has sold over four million smartphones in India within one month. This was achieved by the use of festive sales on India’s biggest e-commerce portals: Flipkart and Amazon.

Flipkart and Amazon had, on September 20, launched the Big Billion Days and the Great India sale respectively during the Diwali festive period, and Xiaomi has taken full advantage of the festive sales. The sales ended on October 19. Mr. Jain also stated that the company’s offline partners contributed to the four million sales, as Xiaomi has started a big push for its smartphones to be sold via offline retail.

How did Xiaomi sell four million smartphones within one month? The answer: their popularity has been increasing at an exponential rate. Mr. Jain revealed that no other smartphone manufacturer has sold more than 4 million smartphones in a month. The four million sales number was achieved by being the number one smartphone brand in both Flipkart and Amazon, as well as simultaneously managing to achieve one milion sales on its own Mi.com e-commerce portal, through which Xiaomi had also conducted a ‘Diwali with Mi’ sale.

The figures promoted by Xiaomi India during this festive sale have been mind-boggling. For example, the company has stated that it sold 300 smartphones per minute, breaking its own record of selling one million smartphones in 18 days during the festive sales last year. This time, it took only two days to sell one million units. In particular, the Redmi Note 4 is now India’s best-selling smartphone, having sold 5 million units in six months. Xiaomi aims to achieve total sales of 7 million units of the phone. Xiaomi has also claimed that eight of the top nine selling smartphones in Amazon India were Xiaomi phones.

It’s worth noting that the company entered the Indian smartphone market in July 2014, and in three years, has managed to sell 25 million smartphones. Xiaomi India has recently surpassed the $1 billion mark in terms of revenue, which has had a tremendous impact on the company’s global revenue, making it possible to sell 10 million smartphones in all regions where the company has a presence in the month of September.

The future looks bright for the Chinese OEM as it remains focused on its budget Redmi series which remain the best smartphones in the budget and lower mid-range segment. The company now also has a newfound focus on flagship smartphones as it launched the premium Mi Mix 2 in India last month, and has started selling it via flash sales on e-commerce platforms.
