Google to Address Pixel 2 Clicking Sounds in a Software Update

The Google Pixel 2, by and large, hasn’t suffered from the problems which have affected its bigger sibling, the Pixel 2 XL. This is because the majority of the complaints with the Pixel 2 XL are related to its display, which it does not share with the Pixel 2. The smaller phone uses a Samsung AMOLED display unlike the LG P-OLED panel of the Pixel 2 XL, and therefore it has bypassed most of the unfortunate issues which P-OLED displays are facing at this point in time. However, users did start facing different issues on the Pixel 2, and as they started hearing high-pitched noise and clicking sounds from the earpiece.

These sounds can be quite noticeable during phone calls, which further inconvenienced affected users. At that time, it was unclear whether the issue was related to hardware or software. Users did try a lot of things to fix the issue at the time of reporting, such as factory resetting, network connectivity changes, and more, but none of it managed to solve the problem.

Google acknowledged the issue a few days later on the Pixel User Community by stating that the company was investigating the user reports. This was precisely the same response it gave to the first reports of burn-in on the Pixel 2 XL. As the company has now responded to general Pixel 2 XL display quality complaints with a new colour mode, software changes to fight burn-in and more, it was expected that the company would also respond to the clicking sounds issue.

Now, Google has lived up to expectations and responded by saying that the clicking sounds are a software issue, not a hardware defect. It also noted that the sounds didn’t affect performance, and could be temporarily eliminated if users switched off NFC. Google announced that it is validating a software update to address “faint clicking sounds on some Pixel 2 devices.” According to the company, the update will be made available in the coming weeks.

If the software update does fix the clicking sounds for all owners who were affected by the issue, then the company’s quick action to respond to the issue and solve it by sending the software update will deserve plaudits.
