OnePlus 6 launched in India, price starts at Rs. 34,999

The OnePlus 6 was globally launched yesterday at an event in London. Regional pricing for India wasn’t revealed at the event, because OnePlus had already scheduled a separate event in Mumbai, India, on May 17. At the Mumbai event, the company officially launched the phone in India, along with the Marvel Avengers limited edition.

OnePlus has only launched two variants of the phone in India. The base variant of the OnePlus 6 has 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, while the higher-end variant has 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The 8GB RAM/256GB storage variant of the device was not launched in the country. This means that if Indian buyers need a OnePlus 6 with 256GB of storage, their only option will be to go for the OnePlus 6 Marvel Avengers Limited Edition, which costs Rs. 44,999 ($664).

The 6GB RAM/64GB storage variant of the phone costs Rs. 34,999 ($517), while the 8GB RAM/128GB storage variant will be available for Rs. 39,999 ($591). Both variants are Rs. 2000 more expensive than the OnePlus 5T’s 6GB RAM and 8GB variants. Although OnePlus opted not to increase the Indian pricing with the launch of the OnePlus 5T in November, the company has increased the global as well as Indian pricing for its successor.

The OnePlus 6 is an Amazon exclusive in the country. It will be available from May 21 for Amazon Prime subscribers, while general availability will start a day later — May 22.

Full specifications of the OnePlus 6 can be viewed here. We have also posted our first impressions of the device. At the event, OnePlus also stated that it’s one of the market leaders in India’s premium smartphone market, along with Apple and Samsung. The OnePlus 5 and the OnePlus 5T were well-received in the country, and were highly rated on Amazon India.

The company also explained their rationale for opting to switch to an “all-glass” design. The main reasons for moving to glass from metal was to enhance signal transmission. OnePlus could also customize the glass design more than a metal build. Finally, glass is also said to look “more beautiful.”

Similarly, wireless charging is not available on the OnePlus 6 because the company feels that fast wired charging — in the form of Dash Chargingis still a better proposition. It will adopt wireless charging in its phones only when it feels that the tech is ready.
