More and more devices nowadays launch with HDR support, but one of the first devices to have an HDR display was the Sony XZ Premium early last year. The LG G6 became the first Android device to support Netflix in HDR though, and since then a number of devices have followed including the LG V30, Razer Phone, and Samsung Galaxy S9 to name a few. The LG G6 also supports Dolby Vision, which is, in theory, more advanced than HDR video. The Huawei P20, Huawei Mate 10 Pro, and the Sony Xperia XZ2 are the latest devices to support Netflix HDR.
For those who aren’t sure what HDR video is, HDR stands for “high dynamic range” and has an excellent colour and contrast presentation. With deeper blacks in the case of AMOLED screens, saturation and brighter whites, these devices are capable of putting out some impressive video quality.
If you want to make use of HDR on the Huawei P20, Huawei Mate 10 Pro, Sony Xperia XZ2 or any of the other 7 supported devices, then you’ll need to download the latest version of Netflix from the Google Play Store. If your device is rooted, it’s likely you won’t be able to install it from the Google Play Store and will need to download and install the latest APK from a 3rd-party. Once you do so, you don’t need to worry about SafetyNet. It only stops you from finding the app on the Google Play Store.
You’ll also need to make sure you’re paying for Netflix Premium, as a regular Netflix subscription won’t do for watching HDR content. Netflix Premium doesn’t just net you HDR playback though, as you’ll also be able to watch supported shows and movies in 4K UHD and stream to up to 4 devices signed into the same account at a time.
