ARCore Support Rolling Out for Samsung Galaxy S9/S9+

ARCore, Google’s new augmented reality platform, had the monumental task of picking up where Project Tango had left off. While Tango needed specialized hardware to work, ARCore and its motion tracking technology relies on the phone’s camera and inertial sensors to track how the phone and its view moves over time. The end result is an experience that can be enjoyed by a wider variety of hardware, both existing and new.

The support for ARCore may not be the highest priority for end users as of now, but one could reasonably expect high end flagships to support the same, seeing how other older flagships could support it. So when the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ launched, users expected Samsung’s latest flagship to support it out-of-the-box, only to find that the phones did not.

The ARCore team took notice of this issue, and mentioned on their Github that support for both of these devices will be added in the next release. And now, with the release of ARCore 1.2 at Google I/O 2018, some owners of the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ have reported on Reddit that ARCore now works on their device without needing any unofficial workarounds. The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ also show up on the list of devices which are officially supported.

To try it out, Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ users need to install the ARCore app from Google Play. You can then install any app from the Play Store that utilizes the platform, such as Just a Line. While these steps should work by themselves, some users have reported that they could get things working properly once they rebooted and reinstalled AR related apps, so you can try these steps out in case it still doesn’t work for you.

Bringing official ARCore support to another one of Samsung’s popular flagship duos works in favor of both the owners of these devices as well as the developers of this platform. We hope to see many more creative uses of this platform in the future.
