Android P beta for the OnePlus 6 is now available

The OnePlus 6 is now official. Powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 system-on-chip with 6GB or 8GB of RAM, the device is a power-house on the basis of specifications alone. You should check out our hands-on of it here. OnePlus has a history as well of supporting the custom development community with easily unlocked bootloaders and fast release of kernel sources and device trees. The OnePlus 6 release appears to be no different, as OnePlus says they have already released kernel sources for the new device before devices have even started shipping. Even better, the Android P beta is already here for it.

It’s a requirement of the GPL that the Linux kernel source code matching the binaries on a device is released, but many companies have disregarded this agreement. Xiaomi was a repeat offender, though they now aim to provide kernel sources within 3 months of a new device release. Kernel source code and device tree availability are important for XDA in particular as it’s the starting point for developers to create custom AOSP-based ROMs and custom kernels for a device. OnePlus released the kernel source code and device trees for the OnePlus 5T at launch, and now they have done the same for the OnePlus 6. (Or at least, that’s what they claim. We don’t actually see the release on their GitHub page, but I’m sure that’ll be rectified soon.)

But that’s not all OnePlus has released either. In the middle of Google I/O 2018, OnePlus revealed that the Android P beta would be available to download and install on the OnePlus 6. As promised, you can now download and install Android P on your OnePlus 6 if you somehow already have one. There are a number of issues with the Android P beta on the OnePlus 6, but none which we can expect to see in the final release. OnePlus says that VoLTE does not work, nor does camera slow motion, face unlock, or Widevine L1 DRM. Bluetooth and the Wi-Fi SoftAP device manager are also slightly broken. Other than that, it should run well enough for developers to run so they can test their applications against the latest API level.
