ConnectWatch Announced: First AsteroidOS-Powered Smartwatch is Coming

AsteroidOS has quite the story behind it. It was announced as an open-source alternative to Android Wear back in 2015, with the first alpha release coming by the end of 2016. However, it was just that – an open source project that you could build and get working on your smartwatch. Yesterday, though, the AsteroidOS team took to Twitter to formally announce a hardware partnership with French start-up ConnectWatch who will make and release the first commercial AsteroidOS smartwatch.

Unlike most Android Wear watches which require being paired with a phone, this watch will work completely independent from your phone. The watch, which features a round 1.39″ 400×400 AMOLED screen (with no flat tire!), will be powered by a quad-core 1.39 GHz MediaTek processor. It will also be available in two different variants featuring 4GBs storage/512MBs of RAM and an 8 GB storage/1 GB RAM configurations. The watch has some other interesting features, too, like a 2 MP camera with 720p video recording support. And, while it doesn’t have 4G LTE support, you get a Nano SIM slot with most of the 3G bands you can find on your phone.

The watch will be powered by the first stable AsteroidOS release. No battery capacity has been disclosed, but the ConnectWatch team claims that you can get 4 days out of a single charge. It also includes all basic apps including a phone dialer, a camera app, and a calendar. It even offers a heartbeat sensor for sports tracking, a chronometer, and a countdown clock. ConnectWear is calling on developers to make applications for AsteroidOS, which means that an app store is in tow as well.

No price has been announced yet, but the watch will allegedly go for pre-order on the European crowdfunding website Ulule soon. Not much more is known about the ConnectWatch since the project was just announced, but you can read up on it on their website. We hope to learn more soon.
