A Reddit user by the name of NightFuryToni has discovered some new potential information about the upcoming new Blackberry Juno, from a UX designer on LinkedIn who works for TCL Corporation. On her website containing her portfolio, “Juno proposals” can be seen. TCL Corporation is one of Blackberry’s manufacturing partners, responsible for devices like the KeyONE..
What’s more, on her LinkedIn page in her “past experiences” section, she mentions the following.
Coordinate the overall docking and UX work of the BlackBerry JUNO project. Offer design conception and design list proposal based on BlackBerry strict security rules and TCL communication commercial strategy. Design some new function including Private folder/capture; LED notification; Convenience key; Screenshot, etc.
It would seem that these are potential design candidates for various aspects of the system, fitting with the “past experiences” on her LinkedIn.
The above images show a potential keyboard return again, along with a new camera app and a focus on privacy for users. We also see some interesting UX, where the space bar is illuminated when the fingerprint icon appears on screen. Not only that, it seems the Blackberry Juno will have a new feature – Jolt.
What is Jolt?
Looking at the images, Jolt is defined as follows.
Jolt mode optimizes your charging time by minimizing your phone’s power usage while it’s plugged in.
Email, messaging and other apps that require syncing may not update unless you open them.
Jolt looks to be a brand new feature by Blackberry. There are Jolt time settings, automatic airplane mode, and a percentage to end Jolt mode at. It seems Blackberry, rather than (or alongside) investing time and money into a fast charging solution, are focusing on improving charging time by decreasing battery usage while the device is charging. This may also result in lower charging temperatures – in theory. Keep in mind that this isn’t too different from the company’s “Boost Mode” feature on the Blackberry KEYOne, where they automatically turn on Battery Saver while plugged in for faster charging times.
What About the Other Images?
It seems Blackberry are adding a private capture mode and a business card mode. Private capture would seem to just be for taking pictures which you don’t want to be visible in your Gallery, but business card mode seems very interesting. There also seems to be a new file manager being added. The mention of “private folder” at the bottom of the file manager showcase suggests this, as a private folder is also mentioned in her past experience on LinkedIn.
It seems that Blackberry are working on adding business card scanning, so that you can add a contact to your device by simply taking a picture of a person’s business card. An example is shown in the second image above.
There are also some UI suggestions for settings and data backup and factory reset. There isn’t a huge amount interesting here, as it even says at the bottom “Please follow Android default behavior”. Not much else is really needed here.
So What Now?
If such images are uploaded now there are likely two scenarios, one being that an NDA was broken or the device is scheduled for release. It’s likely we may see a new announcement by Blackberry in the coming weeks, as it would be extremely unlikely for this to be a broken NDA. We will be keeping a look out at upcoming events, including IFA Berlin 2017 starting September 1st to see if there are any new device announcements. We also expect to see devices like the LG V30 at IFA, so seeing a new Blackberry phone is not unlikely. The above slides look interesting, along with the new features, and we hope to see that some of them make it to the final release.
