Chinese Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 (Redmi Note 5 Pro in India) gets a 6GB RAM + 128GB storage model

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 in China, or what Xiaomi India calls the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, is a popular device in the early mid-range segment. With a 5.99-inch FHD+ display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 SoC, a dual rear camera setup, a big 4,000 mAh battery, and an extremely competitive price to top it off, the Redmi Note 5 (Pro) succeeds the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 as being the premier device from Chinese OEM, despite not being the most powerful; selling over 5 Million units in its first 4 months of sale in India.

Xiaomi has unveiled another storage variant for the Redmi Note 5 in China. Now you can get the device with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, in addition to the other variants like 3GB+32GB and 4GB+64GB. Interestingly, the 6GB+128GB variant is priced at CNY 1,699 (~$251, ₹17,300), which was also the launch price of the 6GB+64GB variant. This new variant might have replaced the earlier 6GB+64GB variant as the older variant is no longer in stock in China, albeit Xiaomi has made no announcement for its discontinuation.

Sales for the new variant will commence from 10 am CST on July 27 on Xiaomi’s Chinese portal. The new variant will be available in all five color options. It is currently unknown if the 128GB storage variant will be available in other markets like India.

The Chinese Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 does bear a few hardware changes from the Indian Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro. The front camera on the Chinese variant has a 13MP sensor, while the Indian variant gets a 20MP sensor. The rear camera set up on the Chinese variant has larger 1.4-micron pixels, larger f/1.9 aperture, and dual-pixel PDAF, while the Indian variant gets conventional PDAF, 1.25-micron pixels, and smaller f/2.2 aperture.

Despite the differences, the device is massively popular in India and elsewhere, and also invites interest from the developer community because of its competitive price value. Notable development works on the Redmi Note 5 (Pro) includes official TWRP supportofficial LineageOS 15.1 support, MultiROM support, and enabling 4K UHD video recording on the rear camera. You can also update the device officially to Android Oreo and also check out the kernel source code for the official Android 8.1 Oreo release.
