Bixby 2.0 will link with third-party apps on the Samsung Galaxy Note 9

Samsung will unveil the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 on August 9 at an event in New York. While the highlight of the event will most definitely be the newest flagship from Samsung, notable side releases will include a new version of Bixby, called Bixby 2.0.

Bixby was launched on the Samsung Galaxy S8 and eventually made its way to several other Galaxy devices. At launch, Samsung’s assistant was criticised for being a mediocre-at-best attempt at providing an AI assistant, and Samsung’s decision to reserve a hardware button exclusively for the virtual assistant did not sit well with many users who wanted greater control over the button.

Bixby 2.0 is expected to improve upon speech recognition rates, AI functionality and natural language processing, noise resistance capabilities and response times from its predecessor. However, the highlight feature on this public release will be the ability to link with third-party apps on the Galaxy Note 9. Samsung is also working on providing an SDK for others to properly integrate support for the assistant into their apps. This will enable the virtual assistant to undertake tasks within these external apps and not restrict itself to simply launching apps and other contextual, but limited, actions.

Samsung has ambitious plans for Bixby as it wants to create an ecosystem where Bixby will hold a key central position. Samsung is already aiming to connect its range of appliances, like smart TVs, refrigerators, air conditioners, and washing machines with Bixby as a smart home platform that can control all of these. Integration with third-party apps will aid in these plans as it will provide scalability and wider acceptance for an app that is already facing stiff competition from Google Assistant and others. The virtual assistant will also receive a hardware push from an AI-focused Bixby speaker that is rumored to come with a rotating display and a camera too.
