Honor View 10 Unveiled in the UK Ahead of January 8 Launch

Honor, Huawei’s international sub-brand, is a force to be reckoned with. At a launch event in London on Tuesday, it announced that it’s the number one smartphone brand in China, and recently said that it wants to become the most popular smartphone brand in India.

The Honor V10 was launched in China a week ago, and now, Honor’s back with the launch of the Honor View 10, the international variant of the V10. It’s designed to go toe-to-toe with affordable flagships in the market such as the OnePlus 5T, and it’s uncompromising.

Unlike the Huawei Mate 10 and the Mate 10 Pro, which have glass backs, the Honor View 10 has a metal unibody.

In fact, the View borrows spme of the Mate 10, the Mate 10 Pro, and past Honor phones’s best features. It has a 5.99-inch FullView display with an 18:9 aspect ratio, a Full HD+ resolution (2160×1080), and a 403 pixel density (PPI). That might sound like the Mate 10 Pro’s display, but it’s superior one in a crucial respect — the View 10’s screen is LCD instead of AMOLED, which means that the effective color resolution is higher because it uses a RGB matrix instead of a PenTile matrix.

The fingerprint sensor on the View 10 is front-facing, but the phone retains the Mate 10 series’ signature small bezels. It fits a bigger display into roughly the same footprint, effectively, as its international predecessor, the Honor 8 Pro.

In terms of internals, the Honor View 10 packs an octa-core HiSilicon Kirin 970 SoC with an i7 co-processor and a dedicated NPU (Neural Processing Unit). It has four ARM Cortex-A73 cores paired with four ARM Cortex-A53 cores, and a Mali-G72MP12, ARM’s latest-generation GPU.

The Honor View 10’s also got 6GB of RAM with 128GB of storage, which can be supplemented with expandable storage thanks to the presence of a microSD card slot. And in terms of connectivity, it has a USB Type-C port, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.2, 4G VoLTE, and NFC.

Honor highlighted the fact that the Honor View 10 has a 3.5mm headphone jack, unlike the Mate 10 Pro.

When it comes to cameras, View 10 Pro has dual rear 16MP+20MP cameras, like previous Honor devices. The 16MP RGB sensor has a f/1.8 aperture and phase detection autofocus but no optical image stabilization, and the sensors come with a wide aperture range, f/0.95 to f/16.

On the video side of the equation, the View 10 supports up to 4K video recording.

The View 10 Pro’s cameras have an AI engine that offers Real-Time Scene and Object Recognition functionality, which means they can automatically choose the best camera settings for any environment. And the phone’s 13MP front-facing camera uses AI to take self-portraits.

Rounding out the Honor View 10’s hardware is a 3,750mAh battery, which is smaller than the 4000mAh battery found in the Mate 10 series. But importantly, the Honor View 10’s battery supports Huawei’s Super Charge fast charging technology (22.5W), which means it’s able to charge from 0 to 50 percent in half an hour.

Our take: Huawei is positioning the Honor View 10 as the “first affordable AI-enabled smartphone”, and while the benefits of AI in the near-term remain to be seen, what’s certain is the fact that the Honor View 10 stands on its own merits — mostly. It combines the best features of the Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro, but there are some omissions, too. For example, the View 10 isn’t water-resistant, and the display resolution is a downgrade from the Honor 8 Pro. On the other hand, it differentiates itself from the pricey Mate 10 Pro with a 3.5mm headphone jack.

But if the international pricing remains competitive, the Honor View 10 loooks certain to give the competition a run for its money. We’ll have more coverage of the device on the XDA Portal soon, so stay tuned.
