Google Will Phase Out Android TV’s Legacy Recommendations

Similar to how other Google services evolve over time, we’re seeing the same thing happen to Android TV as well. The company recently changed up how the user interface of Android TV looks and with that came some changes to how 3rd-party applications interact with the home screen as well. Recommendations from those applications which are still using the older system were still allowed with the new user interface, but today the company has announced they will be phasing this out over the next year.

At Google I/O earlier this year, Google officially announced that Android TV would be receiving a new user interface. The goal was to optimize both the look as well as the user experience of the platform. This can be a difficult thing to do when you consider how basic the Android TV controller is and how diverse the platform has become with applications for games, movies, TV shows, and more. The first version of the Android TV home screen wasn’t badly designed or anything, but Google was still able to improve the user experience with its new update.

However, this change to the user interface impacted the way 3rd-party applications surfaced on the home screen. Once your Android TV device was updated with the new software, recommendations from applications that are using the legacy notification based API resulted in content  added to a channel for that specific application. If there wasn’t a channel on the home screen for that application, then one would be created for you so that it could recommend things to you.

This will be changing over the next year as Google begins to phase out the legacy recommendation system in its current form. Applications which are still using this system will continue to be able to surface content to the home screen. But instead of generating multiple channels (one for each application’s legacy recommendations), Android TV will put all of that recommended content into one single channel that is listed at the bottom of the screen.
