Android Oreo Update is rolling out to the Verizon Moto Z2 Force

Android 8.0 Oreo was released in August 2017. The latest statistics from Google show that it is still installed on only 0.5% of all Android phones, despite the fact that four months have passed since its initial release. In fact, Google rolled-out the Android 8.1 maintenance release update to Pixel and Nexus devices earlier this month, and it’s fair to say that it will take most Android devices quite a while to be updated to that particular version. The bright point is that there is hope for future updates such as Android P thanks to Project Treble.

Even with the slow roll out of updates, we’ve seen manufacturers like Sony, OnePlus, HTC, Nokia, and others start rolling-out the stable Android Oreo update to their device lineups. However, one smartphone vendor which has been conspicuously absent from the update roll out conversation so far is Motorola.

Motorola has had a mixed record in the past with respect to Android updates. At one time, it used to be placed near the top when it came to Android update support, but a variety of controversial decisions mixed with the lack of transparency has diluted the company’s reputation. In September, Motorola officially announced the Android Oreo update for their expanding lineup which did not include the Moto G4 Plus, but after backlash, the company reneged and stated it would honor the Oreo update promise for the G4 Plus.

In November, the company prepared to begin soak testing the Android Oreo update in Brazil starting with the Moto Z and the Moto Z2 Force. Now, multiple users have begun to receive the Android 8.0 Oreo update on their Verizon Moto Z2 Force units.

The update is rolling out via an over-the-air (OTA) update but it may not arrive to all units at once. The 8.0 update should bring the software build to ODX27.109-34. In the changelog, Motorola mentions standard Oreo features such as notification dots, smart text selection, better performance, a new call screen, and more. The update is also expected to include other Android Oreo features such as picture-in-picture mode. Finally, the update brings the November 1, 2017 security patch.

For now, the update is rolling-out only to Verizon Moto Z2 Force units, but it is expected to roll out to other carrier variants soon. Let us know if you received the update in your Verizon Moto Z2 Force unit, and tell us your update experience in the comments.
