Motorola confirms 2018 smartphone launch next month as company changes leadership

Aymar de Lencquesaing, the president of Motorola, has stepped down from his leadership role in the company. After being in the role for two years he will be replaced by Sergio Buniac. He cited wanting to spend more time with his family as the reason for stepping down. This change comes after months of turmoil for the company, including a layoff of half of their Chicago-based employees and a cancellation of the Moto X5. This came after a series of phone leaks which seemed to show all of Motorola’s major releases for the year of 2018.

As a result, things have only looked to be going downhill for the company in the last year or two. Aymar de Lencquesaing was president of Motorola from April 2016 to March 2018, and prior to that was president of Lenovo (Motorola’s parent company). “We realize we’ve had a great deal of transformation over the past years, and we’re grateful for our fans’ support and commitment,” Motorola said in a statement about their recent changes. What’s more interesting for consumers is what came next, a message that the company’s next products will be announced next month. “We’re excited for what 2018 (and beyond!) is going to bring us and look forward to sharing our first products of the year with you next month!”

It’s not clear what device we could be seeing first, and with the Moto X5 being canceled it could be any one of the devices leaked already. The use of “products” also means that there will be more than one device unveiling, which could mean anything currently. There could be new Moto Mods alongside a singular device release or a pair of devices like the Moto Z3 and the Moto Z3 Play could also be launched. We can’t really say at this point in time. As for Motorola’s new leadership, it’s unknown in what direction the company may be headed when we also take into consideration the turmoil Motorola is seemingly embroiled in.
