The Nokia 8 Pro Might Have Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC and “Penta-Lens” Carl Zeiss Camera

The Nokia brand under Finnish smartphone maker HMD Global has made an incredible comeback — the company managed to outsell HTC, Sony, Google and a host of other smartphone manufacturers during Q4 2017. Building on this past year’s momentum, HMD Global plans to launch a flagship device called Nokia 8 Pro, according to Nokia Power User.

The Nokia 8 Pro (codenamed “Nokia 8 Sirocco”), a high-end variant of the Nokia 8, is rumored to come with Qualcomm’s latest flagship system-on-chip, the Snapdragon 845 (an upgrade from the Nokia 8’s Snapdragon 835). It packs four Kryo 835 performance cores clocked at 2.8 GHz (based on the ARM Cortex A75) and four Kryo 835 efficiency cores clocked at 1.8 GHz (based on ARM Cortex A55), and features Qualcomm’s brand new Adreno 630 GPU, which is based upon an entirely new architecture.

Apart from shipping with the most powerful SoC available to smartphone OEMs, the Nokia 8 Pro is said to improve on the Nokia 8’s camera — HMD Global has taken a page from the old Nokia playbook and partnered with longtime lens manufacturer Carl Zeiss. Specifically, the Nokia 8 Pro is rumored to come with a rotating, penta-lens dual camera module that rotates to change the camera’s focal length, expanding the camera’s zoom range.

The Nokia 8 Pro’s other highlights include a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, a 3D glass back and front, and an 18:9 display.

The rest of the phone’s camera specs remain a mystery, but they might not be far off from the Nokia 8’s camera. It has a 13MP RGB sensor with 1.12-micron pixels, a f/2.0 aperture, and optical image stabilization, and a secondary 13MP monochrome sensor. The Nokia 8 uses phase detection autofocus (PDAF), time-of-flight laser focus, and contrast detection to help aid in focusing, and when it comes to video, the it records in resolutions up to 4K at 30FPS.

HMD Global has clearly been able to capitalize on the Nokia brand name, and if the rumors are true, the Nokia 8 Pro won’t disappoint. Here’s hoping we learn more at the upcoming 2018 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, which kicks off in late February.
