Honor View 10’s Face Unlock Ported to the Honor 8 Pro, Huawei P10 Plus, and Possibly Other EMUI 8 Devices

Smartphone OEMs are constantly developing new features to help their devices stand out from the competition. Sometimes, it’s the material in the chassis, or an iconic design, or new software functionality. Android has had primitive face unlock for years, but it wasn’t until recently we started to see it feature heavily in devices. Huawei and Honor have been working on facial authentication for some of their most popular smartphones, and now the developer community has ported it to the Honor 8 Pro.

Just last month, Honor pushed out a big update to the Honor View 10, and among the new features was the aforementioned face unlock feature. A few weeks ago, the Honor 7X and the Honor 9 both received updates that added face unlock.

It’s clear that Honor and Huawei can bring the feature to older devices. And because Huawei and Honor’s version of facial recognition is a lot faster and more secure than Android’s native implementation, it’s no surprise that lots of users are clamoring for it. Rather than wait for the OEMs to roll out an update, though, XDA Senior Member ante0 created a port of face unlock for the Honor 8 Pro and the Mate 9.

You can install it and flash it in TWRP, or via a Magisk Module. Once you’ve done that, you’ll have to “enroll” your face by heading to Settings > Security & Privacy > Face Unlock.

XDA Senior Member Blackball has confirmed the port works flawlessly on the Huawei P10 Plus, and while not entirely confirmed right now, there’s one common denominator between these devices: they’re running EMUI 8.0. It’s possible, then, that any Honor or Huawei smartphones and tablets running EMUI 8.0 or higher are compatible with the face unlock port. Rest assured, we’ll be keeping our eye on the XDA forum thread for updates.
