The ZTE Axon 7 was ZTE’s flagship smartphone in 2016. It only launched in a few territories internationally, but it went on to challenge phones such as the OnePlus 3/3T in mid-range markets. With a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 system-on-chip, 5.5-inch QHD (2560×1440) AMOLED display, and a 20MP camera, the Axon 7 was a great value for the money. It had great software support, too.
However, ZTE opted not to release a successor to the Axon 7 in 2017. Instead, it launched the Axon M — a quirky foldable phone with dual displays. The Axon M might point to the future of smartphones, but at present, it remains a niche. And it’s definitely not a proper sequel to the Axon 7, which meant that fans of the Axon 7 had to wait.
In November, ZTE confirmed that the Axon 7’s successor was coming soon, but didn’t specify a timeframe. Now, in an interview with Ifeng Tech, ZTE CEO Cheng Lixin said that the company will launch a new device in the Axon series called the Axon 9. Why the Axon 9 and not Axon 8? Because Axon sounds like “sky machine” in Chinese, apparently, but Axon 8 sounds like “mess up”.
Mr. Lixin didn’t disclose any details about the Axon 9, unfortunately. The device will be released this year, but for now, its specifications remain a mystery.
During the interview, Mr. Lixin talked about the Axon M, and said that ZTE wants to increase its market share in China. He also revealed plans for the company’s future product lineups: “Class A” and “Class B”. Class A will comprise the company’s Axon flagship smartphone series, and Class B will represent its low-end Blade phones and tablets.
Expectations are riding high for the Axon 9, as competition increases in the affordable flagship market. We expect to learn more about the Axon 9 in the coming weeks and months.
