Audio Calling Rolling Out to Google Duo

Remember Google Duo, the less criticized of the two Google messaging apps that were announced at Google I/O 2016? The video calling app was a good way of bringing video chats to the average consumer through its ease of use, although it massively suffered from declining popularity as many Google products do.

The limelight is now back on Google Duo, as Google’s Head of Product for Google Allo and Google Duo, Amit Fulay, took to Twitter to announce that audio calls are now rolling out worldwide on Google Duo.

The audio calling functionality for Google Duo had been planned for a while, so it’s good to see it finally materialize and go live for all devices.

I am personally a fan of Duo’s simplistic approach to video calling, though my use cases and need for a video calling app itself were very slim. The hype for me worked for a short period after the initial launch of the app, but as the people I brought onto the app eventually uninstalled it, I had to as well. Google Duo did not work for me on a personal level due to lack of use cases.

Google Duo also faces competition from within Google itself. As has been the case in the past, Google launched another product that encroaches upon territory designated to a different app initially. With Hangouts Meet, Google recently gave us a competitor to Google Duo, further cutting down on the use cases of the app. Then there are talks of Google working on yet another social app for small groups to edit photos together, so depending on how that pans out, said rumored app could be encroaching upon some more territories.

What are your thoughts on Google Duo receiving audio calling? Was including this feature in a video calling app a smart move on Google’s end? Let us know in the comments below!
