Xiaomi launches the Xiaomi Mi 6X in China with dual cameras and the Snapdragon 660 SoC

Two weeks ago, we exclusively reported on the specifications of the Mi 6X. At an event in China on Wednesday, Xiaomi launched the Xiaomi Mi 6X, which is the successor to last year’s Xiaomi Mi 5X.

The Xiaomi Mi 6X is a mid-range device, and it’s more expensive than the Redmi Note 5 Pro. It’s worth noting that in 2017, the Xiaomi Mi 5X was the base device for the Android One-powered Mi A1 in international markets.

Let’s take a look at the specifications of the Mi 6X:

The Xiaomi Mi 6X is made of unibody aluminium, like the Mi 5X. The antenna bands are hidden at the top and bottom, and the fingerprint sensor is placed on the back of the device. The dual cameras are placed vertically like the Redmi Note 5 Pro.

The phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 system-on-chip. For reference, the Redmi Note 5 Pro is powered by the Snapdragon 636 SoC, which is a lower-end variant of the Snapdragon 660. The Snapdragon 660 features four Kryo 260 cores clocked at 2.2GHz (based on Cortex-A73) and four Kryo 260 cores clocked at 1.8GHz (based on Cortex-A53). The cores are paired with the Adreno 512 GPU, which is more powerful than the Adreno 509 of the Snapdragon 636.

There are three configurations of the phone: 4GB of RAM paired with 64GB of storage, 6GB of RAM paired with 64GB of storage, and 6GB of RAM paired with 128GB of storage. A microSD card slot is present as well.

The Mi 6X has a 5.99-inch Full HD+ (2160×1080) IPS LCD with an 18:9 aspect ratio. In the camera department, the phone has a new dual camera setup. The Mi 5X/Mi A1 had 12MP + 12MP rear cameras, with a primary wide-angle camera and a secondary camera with a telephoto lens. The Redmi Note 5 Pro, on the other hand, has 12MP + 5MP (depth sensing) rear cameras. The Mi 6X has a different camera module from both the Mi 5X/Mi A1 and the Redmi Note 5 Pro.

The phone has a 12MP primary camera with the Sony IMX486 sensor, 1.25μm pixels, and an f/1.75 aperture. The 20MP secondary camera has a Sony IMX376 sensor, 1.0μm pixels, and the same f/1.75 aperture. It’s used for achieving better low-light photos, and is also used for Xiaomi’s implementation of portrait mode. The front-facing camera has a 20MP Sony IMX376 sensor with an f/2.2 aperture.

Xiaomi states that the secondary camera has pixel binning that combines four pixels into a single pixel for a brighter photo, similar to the OnePlus 5T and the Oppo R15. It also comes with AI detection for over 200 scenes, and has 12 different portrait modes. The AI supposedly learns over time to achieve better detail as well.

The phone has Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, dual SIM slots, and a USB Type-C port. However, it does not have a 3.5mm headphone jack, which makes it the first mid-range Xiaomi device to opt to skip the headphone jack. NFC is also missing. The Mi 6X does have an IR blaster.

The Xiaomi Mi 6X has Face Unlock support. It’s powered by a 3010mAh battery, which is slightly smaller than the 3080mAh battery of the Mi 5X/A1, but significantly smaller than the 4000mAh battery of the Redmi Note 5 Pro. It ships with MIUI 9.5 on top of Android 8.1 Oreo, and has Project Treble support.

Xiaomi Mi 6X – Pricing and availability

The Mi 6X will be available in China in Black, Gold, Rose Gold, Blue, and Red color variants. The base 4GB RAM/64GB storage variant of the device costs CNY 1599 ($253), while the 6GB RAM/64GB storage and 6GB RAM/128GB variants cost CNY 1799 ($285) and CNY 1999 ($316) respectively.
