Google Daydream VR Certified Devices Can now Have Displays up to 6.3″

Some people feel that Google is too lenient when it comes to letting OEMs use the Android platform with services such as the Google Play Store. However, the company has an extensive list of requirements that smartphone manufacturers must follow called the Android Compatibility Definition Document. Along with keeping certain companies from abusing the platform, they also use it to detail requirements for a smartphone to be certified with the Google Daydream platform.

As we’ve talked about before, Google Daydream is something the company is taking very seriously and has gone as far as to setup a complete division dedicated to experimenting with projects for it. Instead of just giving developers a platform and forcing them to figure things out for themselves, Google wants to help the community by offering some best use cases for some of the most common tasks in a VR environment. So it’s clear to us that Google wants it to succeed to the point where they’re investing their own time and resources to optimize the user experience.

And optimizing the user experience is something they’re able to do with the Android Compatibility Definition Document. With the introduction of Google Daydream, the company laid out a number of requirements that a smartphone must meet in order to be certified for the platform. This includes a certain number of CPU cores, Vulkan support, certain performance levels for decoding and more. The Android CDD also required that a smartphone must be within a certain size in order for it to quality too.

With its initial release, this screen size requirement was a diagonal of 4.7″ and 6″. This is good enough for most smartphones these days but Samsung has released two smartphones that exceed that screen size. The Galaxy S8+ has a 6.2″ display and the upcoming Galaxy Note 8 will have a 6.3″ display, though with taller aspect ratios. So Google is working with Samsung and has now updated the CDD to allow smartphones with a screen size of 4.7″ to 6.3″ to quality for Google Daydream certification.
