OnePlus 3 to Come With NFC; Leaked Screenshot Shows N Preview Build

OnePlus managed to garner a lot of attention with their first device, and the stakes and hype were raised even higher for their next. But the OnePlus 2 failed to attract as much praise as its predecessor.

There were a few things wrong with the OnePlus 2. The device was not built up on the hype that was built for it. Despite being claimed as a Flagship Killer of 2016, the phone itself lacked in a few hardware areas which made it lose when being compared with actual flagships. It seems that OnePlus has learnt some from their past mistakes. A few of the complaints on the OnePlus 2 are seemingly being addressed with the OnePlus 3. According to new information flowing through Evan Blass, the OnePlus 3 is aiming to be a better affordable package than its predecessor.

Evan posted a screenshot of the OnePlus 3, allegedly running a build of the N Preview on OxygenOS 3.1.0. Android 6.0 Marshmallow for OnePlus devices is based on OxygenOS 3.0.x, so a bump up in the sub-version makes sense. But since the N Preview is a “preview” for good reasons, it is unlikely that OnePlus would release the device with a developer-only Android version. Our best guess is that the device if it launches before consumer release of Android N, will ship with Android 6.0. The Android N update would then be rolled out when the version became public-ready.

Evan also posted some more information on the device. Namely, he mentions a return of NFC on what will be OnePlus’s actual flagship of 2016. This should silence critics who lamented the loss of NFC in 2015, and it makes good sense for flagships to bear this. Along with NFC, Evan also mentions the existence of a 5.5″ 1080p display, Snapdragon 820 SoC, 64GB of internal storage and a 16MP rear camera.

The OnePlus 3 seems like it will tick a lot of boxes for a lot of people. However, with OnePlus opting for a VR Launch affair again this year, a 1080p display for the subject device is inadequate for a good virtual reality experience and will attract a fair share of criticism on this front. But on the battery front, a 1080p display works better than a 1440p display, with all other things held equal. So it will be interesting to see if OnePlus will try and aim to please all of the market, or choose to focus on a subset only.
