LG Invites Registrations for “Play with Friends” Developer Event

LG tried to make modularity mainstream by incorporating it directly on their flagship for 2016, the LG G5. Although the approach taken by LG restricts the actual modularity aspect of a device, they have taken a notable risk by going in a direction that the consumer market has not yet gone for, so we’ll cut them some slack here.

To really make the LG G5, and more specifically, the “module” aspect of it a success, LG is hosting a developer focused event, centered around the new LG Friends, a name given to the “modules” for the LG G5. This event will be held on Friday, April 15th 2016, 6.00 pm – 9.00 pm PDT in San Francisco.

The event primarily concentrates on how developers can take advantage of the LG Friends modules using LG’s latest Android SDK’s. The session will also shed more light on how you can create your own camera control app for the new LG 360 CAM and LG 360 VR viewer as well as learn more about Google’s Open Spherical Camera API, along with how you can utilize the VR Open SDK to its full potential.

  • Epiq VR Open Platform
  • Google Street View Collaboration

It seems that LG is betting big time on the success of the LG Friends, which could further dictate on what the LG G6 might turn out to be. If the modules actually take off and become commercially profitable products with supplementary functionality offered on the software end, we could see this approach refined and adopted on more devices and see modules from more partners.
